Alpha Bank’s journey began in 1879 with J.F. Costopoulos & Company - a family-led venture rooted in trust, ambition, and a deep connection to the Greek economy. What started as a modest enterprise soon flourished into one of Greece’s most respected financial institutions. By 1924, the Bank had established its headquarters in Athens, and just a year later, its shares were listed on the Athens Stock Exchange - a milestone that marked its growing influence.

In 1994, the Bank embraced a bold new identity: Alpha Credit Bank. This evolution paved the way for a landmark merger with Ionian Bank in 1999, giving rise to Alpha Bank S.A. - a name now synonymous with stability, innovation, and a steadfast commitment to excellence. Today, Alpha Bank stands as Greece’s largest privately owned commercial bank, with a reputation built on integrity and forward-thinking leadership.

The Group’s presence in London began in 1989 with the opening of a Representative Office, which became a full branch by 1994. That same year, Alpha Bank acquired the Commercial Bank of London Plc, strengthening its ties to the Greek and Cypriot communities in the UK. Rebranded as Alpha Bank London Limited, it quickly established itself as a trusted name in private banking and international finance.

From its origins in the Peloponnese to its presence in global financial centres, Alpha Bank’s story is one of evolution, resilience, and a quiet determination to serve with distinction.
